The Alexander Technique is a century-old method for learning how to use your body the way it is designed. Generally, we use too much muscular effort, even in sitting & lying down. Our bodies want to balance, but we unconsciously interfere. The AT is a method for becoming conscious of yourself in a manner which will allow you to reduce making too much of an effort and allow the design of your body to work well. Improving the way you use your body will give you more ease in your daily life. It will help you to be "present," and will refine your artistic and athletic performance. In addition, it will allow you to recover from injuries & to reduce pain more effectively.
Through the Alexander Technique you can:
• reduce tension
• improve flexibility
• gain ease in movement & breath
• refine athletic & artistic skills
• learn good posture with ease
• manage & even eliminate pain
• increase energy & attention
• People in pain - physical & emotional • Athlete • Artists & Performers • People who wish to be more present & at ease • Pregnant Women • Couples • Kids & Teens
How is learning Alexander different from going to a Chiropractor, PT, or Masseuse?
Alexander is not a treatment, but a system of learning how to improve your everyday use. No matter why you come to an Alexander teacher you will learn how to use the whole design of your body better.
What is the difference between Alexander & other disciplines, such as Yoga & Pilates?
Though there are some AT "procedures" designed to help you to train you to use yourself better, the AT is intended to improve your use in every moment. It will help you to do other disciplines well.
Does it matter how old I am?
No. Alexander therapists work with many students below 10, and others in their late 90s. All increase range of use & decrease pain. Some of the best Alexander teachers are in their 70s, 80s & 90s.
A common example of improper use is chronically bracing against pain. Bracing not only cuts off the pain signal, but constricts the passageways for oxygen, blood, & other fluids so that more damage is done. The AT can teach you how to ease your pain through release rather than constriction. This way of working with a damaged area allows pressure to be released from the area & healing fluids to get to the injury.
Our movement, thoughts & emotions are interconnected. Learning how to rebalance ourselves physically changes our emotional & intellectual life.
Ed Rosenberg, Athlete & Retiree, after hip surgery
"(Dr.) Fishman delivered me into the hands of...Kim Guzowski...and I began to learn something of the Alexander Technique. And it seems to be working; after five or six weeks I am beginning to walk without stumbling. Kim has also taught me to stand and to sit and to keep myself upright and straight. I am learning how to bend down to pick up something...In a short time I have come to realize just how valuable this is...what Alexander does is to teach one how to use one's muscles, no matter how deteriorated, to accomplish the ordinary tasks of life.. This is a hard task but even at my age I want to get back some of what I had...I'm pretty sure I can accomplish this - of course with the help of Kim and the AT."
Rose Anna Mineo, Difficulty Walking & Back Pain
"When I first came to Dr. Fishman, I could hardly walk. My right leg is a 1/2 shorter than my left and my posture was very poor...Within a few months of learning the Alexander Technique with Ms. Guzowski, I was off pain medication and walking all the time!"
Anna E. Papadopoulos, Arthritis & Chronic Pain
"I am a 29-year old woman with...Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis ...With Kim's continued help, I've regained a sense of balance I haven't known since childhood; my skeleton feels aligned & now I work with gravity to protect myself, rather than fearing it...While I still struggle with limited range of motion & bouts of pain, I no longer feel this is a fight between my will & my body.. All these benefits have combined to create a sense of empowerment over this illness, & my life in general..."
Jordan Forth, Injured Certified Personal Trainer
"For 6 years I have suffered a constant almost debilitating pain throughout my right shoulder...after 3 lessons I can report the pain has stopped. I don't consider that far short of a miracle."
Karen Anderson, Back/Shoulder Pain & Menopause
"When I began AT with Kim, I was recovering from a back injury as well as lingering problems with my shoulder. I tried chiropractic treatment, which helped, but did not seem to get to the root of the problem. I found the Alexander Technique to be amazing...after just a couple of weeks, not only did the pains and stiffness from the injuries disappear, but so did aches and pains I had for years in other parts of my body."
Kenda Caniglia, Athlete with Knee & Back Pain
"For months, I had not been able to run for more than 15 to 20 minutes without my knees or lower back aching... Kim taught me how to move with the design of my body resulting in less stress & pain & more grace & ease. With just a few classes under my belt...I started running again...Within just a few days I was running for 60 minutes without any pain in my knees or lower back... I feel stronger than I ever have."
Joanne Marin, Shoulder & 10-years of Knee Injuries
"I can walk (normally). It's been years since I could say that... Each day is better...I'm walking all over the city now...The Alexander Method is all straightforward re-learning how to move the way I did as a child. How to use the spine to carry the weight. How to walk without pain."
Jessica Morton, Broadway Stage Hand with Back Pain
"I began taking Alexander class as a way to work on my posture and lower back pain from my job...Of all the things I expected to gain from Alexander, better control of my emotional state was not one of them, but, in addition to improving my back, I found I gained a wonderful new state of calm."
Maggie Schwarz, Marathon Runner
"After struggling for several years with difficulty maintaining an erect position on long distance runs, I consulted Kim Guzowski. After just eight lessons over ten days my marathon performance improved greatly - I ran the same time I was running 15 years ago...I cannot recommend Kim Guzowski strongly enough."
Telena Mara, Classical Singer & Julliard MAP faculty
"As a classical singer, my work with Kim has turned out to be important in my progress both professionally and otherwise. Not only did I notice both large and small changes in my vocal production when singing, I also would leave my Alexander classes feeling intensely energetic and relaxed... My teaching with conservatory students is stronger and more focused."
