Free Botulinum for Permanent Non-Surgical Cure of Rotator Cuff Syndrome
Drs. Loren Fishman and Allen Wilkins are accepting participants in a non-surgical clinical trial to improve their simple one-session technique for curing rotator cuff tear and pain. The study will include an injection of free botulinim toxin.
The technique, without the injection, has relieved the pain of 583 out of 610 patients over the past seven years, but without complete tendon repair. Now Drs. Fishman and Wilkins will test their theory that one injection of bolulinim toxin will relax the joint sufficiently and for long enough for total tendon repair to occur naturally, preventing development of arthritis.
The study received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval on Friday, January 15, 2010.
Participants will:
- Obtain an MRI to determine that they have rotator cuff syndrome
- Do simple short-term exercises that recruit other muscles in the shoulder to do the job of the injured muscles and tendons, with 90% chance of immediate pain relief and restoration of range of motion
- Receive either free botulinin toxin type A or placebo.
- Receive physical therapy until one week without pain, for a maximum of 12 weeks.
- Obtain a second MRI 12 weeks after injection to document healing
This clinical trial is being done in the offices of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where we accept almost all major insurances and will assist study participants with all arrangements.
